Al Jazeera, Discovery MENA shop at TVF

Numerous MENA-based broadcasters have picked up a selection of factual programming from global non-scripted distributor TVF International.

Al Jazeera Media Network, BBC Arabic and Discovery MENA have all acquired shows that originally aired on UK channels including BBC4 and ITV4.

Science show The Amazing World of Gravity (2×45’), presented by theoretical physicist Jim Al-Khalili, and BBC4 documentary The Man Who Shot Tutankhamun (1×48’), celebrating the photos captured during the excavation of the pharaoh’s tomb, have been acquired by Al Jazeera Media Network.

Al Jazeera also bought Channel 4’s The Billion Dollar Flower Market (1×46’), which looks at the new generation of British florists, and Discovery Asia’s Flying the Great Wall (1×52’). The Maritime Silk Road (6×48’), which originally aired on Channel NewsAsia, was also picked up by the network.

BBC Arabic has taken The Checklist Effect (1×45’), produced by Collaborate: Ideas & Images, which talks to people in hospitals around the world, including patients, doctors and experts, to understand the challenges faced by surgical teams. It also bought PBS’s Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World (1×57’), which provides insight into Islamic culture.

Discovery MENA has picked up the third season of ITV4 fishing format The Big Fish (14×46’), while Kuwait TV has acquired a 25-hour package including Aerial Asia (4×46’), Autism: Challenging Behaviour (1×60’), and Brain Damage: The Truth About Trauma (1×52’).

Along with Dubai TV, the broadcaster also picked up packages of over 20 hours of science, space, health and travel and adventure programming from TVF’s specialist factual catalogue.

The MENA sales follow on quickly from TVF’s recent global deals in Australia, New Zealand, and Spain among others.
