Budapest Power Players

Factual distributor TVF is looking to target Russian buyers and Polish clients at this year's NATPE Budapest with its slate of high-end factual series and one-off documentaries.

Sales and acquisition executive Anna Budashevskaya is leading this Central and Eastern Europe charge with series including Price of Kings, Opium Brides and The World From Above.

"Russia is always a good animal to target; there's a huge amount of money and huge number of channels. The channels come and go and it sums up the exciting nature of the Eastern European business," she says. "Poland is also very exciting and there's a really high culture of documentaries."

However, one of the challenges for factual distributors at NATPE Budapest is that is runs in direct competition with Sunnyside of the Doc. "Sunnyside is on at the same time so there's a real spit. The buyers who take documentaries really seriously will be at Sunnyside," adds Budashevskaya.

Price of Kings is TVF's hottest new series at the market. The three part series is produced by British independent producer Spirit Film and follows leaders including Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres. "These films are quite explosive and disarmingly honest," she says. "It asks, what does it cost them personally to make the decisions that they have had to make?"

Budashevskaya, who also looks after Scandinavia, is hoping to meet many new buyers at Budapest. "This year, NATPE Budapest looks a little different. I'm still filling my diary but it's a little less busy with some of the bigger buyers, although there's still lots of good opportunities to meet new buyers. It's a great place to hunt for new clients," she says.
