The Mission

4 x 26

This is the story of missionaries in reverse, as three young, Nigerian Catholic priests, who haven’t volunteered and have never left Africa before, are sent to save Tasmania’s struggling Church. But can they fulfill The Mission?

The Mission follows the young missionary priests as they travel from Equatorial Africa, Nigeria to Australia’s island State, Tasmania. We journey with them from their arrival on Hobart’s coldest winter day, to their assignments in the remote corners of the State. It’s a roller coaster ride of faith, dedication and culture shock, as we follow the missionaries from day one of their three-year mission, to the end of their first year in Tasmania.

Never before has the Catholic Church allowed such access to the behind-the-scenes world of the missionary, both in Nigeria and Australia. Will the missionaries cope with a climate they were told could kill them, and survive on food they’ve been told they won’t be able to eat? Will they struggle to be welcomed into a largely white community, that some in Nigeria believe doesn’t want black priests? Or will the dwindling congregations of aging Catholics, coupled with the resistance of the local clergy prove too hard a cross to bear?
