Monumental Vision

10 x 26 HD

Monumental Vision is an international arts and culture series which follows the adventures of internationally renowned contemporary sculpture Andrew Rogers, as he works in remote and exotic locations around the world – Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Australia, Iceland, China, India, Turkey, Nepal, Slovakia and the USA.

Rogers creates giant Earth Artworks made of rock and designed to be viewed from the air. At each location he collaborates with the indigenous people to build an artistic bridge back to their past, a bridge in the form of ancient symbols and Monumental Geoglyphs which provide the present generation with a frame of reference to their history and heritage.

Coloured by local history, archaeology, dance, music, ceremony and a twist of adventure, Monumental Vision is an informative and visually seductive series. Wide angle lenses and some HD format provide panoramic vistas, and helicopter access enables breathtaking aerial vision, capturing the scale and aesthetic resolution of the work in its natural setting.

Sri Lanka (SD)
Rogers works with over 1,000 stone masons to create Pride The Lion, the national symbol of Sri Lanka, Ratio, a reflection of the religious temples of the area, and his signature piece, The Rhythms of Life. Steep grades, tropical storms and roads being washed away are some of the challenges that flavour this episode.

Bolivia (SD)
At the highest city in the world, Potosí in Bolivia, the air is thin and the mountains very rocky and difficult to build on.  Complexities on site mean that a call goes out for more manpower and at one point there are over 1,500 people working together. When the work is complete the townspeople dance the evening away in colourful local dress.

Australia (SD)
The vast continent of Australia carries a rich tapestry of storylines which the indigenous peoples are striving hard to preserve. Around a bush campfire, Rogers hears the story of ‘Bunjil The Wedge Tailed Eagle’ and sets about sorting the materials to create an Earthworks series in the famous City of Geelong in the state of Victoria. The chosen sites are a few kilometres apart, one by the side of a lake, and the other in the outer hills of the Yu Yang ranges.

Iceland (HD)
Positioned on the divide between tectonic plates, Icelandic landscape sees a constant ’war’ between ice and fire, resulting in breathtakingly dramatic scenery. In this episode Rogers is invited to Akureyri, a city located at the end of the largest fiord in Iceland, to preserve the ancient Celtic/Viking mythology through a series of Earth Artworks.

China (HD)
Rogers goes to Jia Yu Guan to create three Monumental Geoglyphs on a site near the western gate of the Great Wall. One of these is The Caveman, based on an ancient nomadic man from a series of petraglyphs in the nearby mountains which represents some of the earliest tribes in this region of China.

India (HD)
On the steep slopes of the Aravali mountain range, north of Jobner in the Indian state of Rajasthan, Rogers sets out to create two Monumental Geoglyphs – his signature work and a work chosen by the elders of the area. This windswept episode is punctuated by regular singing, dancing, colourful saris and sacred rituals.

Turkey (HD)
Set in the magical town of Göreme, this episode features hot air ballooning, underground cities, rustic Turkish coffee shops, carpet weaving, and spectacular aerial views. 1,500 stonemasons and workers meet the challenges of the ‘fairy chimneys’ rock formations in Cappadocia, building two exceptional Geoglyphs in the historic landscape.

Nepal (HD)
Nepal is a country of great topographical features – the highest mountains in the world and the deepest gorges. This episode is inspiring, breathtaking, and logistically challenging, with excellent aerial shots that deliver the viewer a final encore. Here two of Rogers’ artworks are sacred Buddhist symbols from Nepal’s ancient past.

Slovakia (HD)
Rogers meets the Romanian Gypsies and with them creates Earth Artworks which connect them to their past. A visit from a large contingent of school children provides a vibrant local interaction during the episode. Gypsy music, dance and local art and culture infuse the building and a spectacular end ceremony exudes the colours and traditions of the Romanian Gypsies.

USA (HD)
Rogers constructs two geoglyphs in North America’s Mohave Desert including a construction based on a 3000-year-old petroglyph of a native spear thrower. For the closing ceremony he participates in a smoke ceremony lead by well known actor Steve Reevis, a Native American who appeared in the Academy Award-winning 1990 film dances with Wolves.
