Antarctica: Ice World Pioneers

1 x 56
Broadcaster:  SABC

The adventure begins with the 4600km journey from the southern tip of Africa - the mission: to construct a new and advanced research base (SANAE IV). This programme is a stunning visual Odyssey revealing the mystery and wild beauty of the ice continent. One of the most visually impressive parts of the journey is the navigation through one thousand kilometers of pack ice, which leaves an indelible memory in the minds of the pioneers. The slow forward thrust of the ship; the ice cracking and splitting beneath; has it’s own eerie, unworldly sound, and in the ship's wake the ice pack quickly joins and freezes solid once more. Antarctica has a wonderful history of men and women, all volunteers, who have travelled to Queen Maud land over the past forty years to establish, maintain and improve the research bases there. Antarctica: Ice World Pioneers is the celebration of human adventure, courage, ingenuity, determination and sacrifice in one of the most hostile parts of our planet.
