Flying Dragon Year for TVF International in Asia

Michael Rosser, 3 August 2012

Distributor TVF International has bolstered its activity in Asia with new programme acquisitions from the region – while securing a raft of UK documentary sales.

The factual distributor has picked up Special Forces from History Channel Asia, a 4 x 47-minute doc series that reveals the brutal training and cutting-edge combat capabilities of Asia’s elite special ops unit.

TVF has also picked up Asia’s Underworld from C&I Network Asia, an 8 x 26-minute series looking at the face of crime in the region.

Other recent acquisitions from Asia include lifestyle titles Property Hunter from Channel NewsAsia and Martin Yan: True Passion from the Asian Food Channel.

In Japan, TVF has sold one-off documentary War Horse: the Real Story to broadcaster NHK while Nippon TV has acquired wildlife titles Common Ground: a Human Elephant Story and Facing the Storm.

Also in Japan, TFC has picked up BBC science documentaries Everything & Nothing and The Secret Life of Chaos.

In addition, TVF has sold close to 60 hours of content to True Visions in Thailand while India’s AETN18 has secured a range of titles including cookery series Galleons of Spice and cutting-edge special Forced Marriage Unit.

Will Stapley, senior sales executive at TVF, said Asia has a “hugely varied appetite for factual programming” and that “despite an increasing desire for ‘local’ content, our documentaries are more popular than ever with Asian buyers”.
