TVF ties up with Zig Zag

Anita Awbi, C21 Media, 9 February 2011

Distributor TVF International (TVFI) has picked up factual series Freddie vs the World from indie Zig Zag Productions, in the first of several programme acquisitions for the sales house.

TVFI has acquired international rights to the eight-parter that pits celebrity cricketer Freddie Flintoff against other athletes in a series of physical contests. During the ITV4 series, Flintoff takes on celebrities including Dennis Rodman, Iwan Thomas and Dennis Wise across North America.

Leila Monks, TVFI's director, told C21 that she hoped the deal marked the start of an ongoing relationship with Zig Zag, adding that there were more as-yet undisclosed deals in the pipeline.

TVFI has also picked up a one-off doc from US company Atlas Media Corp. Robert Blecker Wants Me Dead (1x52') traces the friendship between Blecker, one of America's most high-profile supporters of capital punishment, and convicted murderer Daryl Holton. The film festival favourite aired stateside on MSNBC in 2009.

Monks said that while the TV market was "trending towards consolidation" among distributors and producers, it was important for smaller companies to maintain autonomy.

"With factual, you can't just stick everything on the back of a lorry, you need the personal approach. Big consolidated media companies have hours and hours of content, including their own, so indies are worried that their stuff will get lost in all of that," she said.

TVFI specialises in one-off science and history programming, "things that need that extra push," said Monks, and the distributor also has some coproductions in development, details of which are yet to be revealed.

"There is still room for the independent producer who is very good at what they do. It's good for us to team up with them and take on the big players. We have to be more aggressive and push ourselves," said Monks.
