Basquiat: Rage to Riches

1 x 52 HD
Broadcaster:  BBC

This BAFTA-winning film explores the life and work of one of the great artistic legends of the 20th century. Featuring world-first exclusive interviews with his sisters, and input from Basquiat’s legendary art dealers alongside his most intimate friends, lovers, and fellow artists.

The recent Sotheby’s auction sale of a Jean-Michel Basquiat ‘Skull’ painting for over a hundred million dollars has catapulted this Brooklyn born artist into the top tier of the international art market, joining the ranks of Picasso, de Kooning, and Francis Bacon.

Jean-Michel Basquiat may be known for dating Madonna and collaborating with Andy Warhol, but more significantly, his unique form of expressionism defied the straight jacket of 1970’s minimalism.  It tapped into the energy of NYC streets in the 1980s and found inspiration from cutting edge music, poetry, as well as the grand traditions of 20th century art.

Like Andy Warhol before him, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life and art have become inextricably intertwined.  As an African American with little formal training in art, Basquiat’s rise to art world fame and riches has also been the subject of mythologizing, sensation, and misrepresentation.
