Adopted into Bondage: Myanmar's Child Slaves

1 x 48 HD
Broadcaster:  CNA

Underage domestic workers are common in Myanmar, where poverty-stricken families find hard labour for their children as an alternative to abandoning them. Some are even adopted officially. Parents pushing their children into slavery results in many being physically and emotionally abused, whilst others turn a blind eye.

In September 2016, it was revealed that a locally well-known tailor shop had kept two teenage girls for years, beating and stabbing them, leaving both girls permanently scarred. This explosive case went viral, and exposed the sordid plight of children in bondage. We look beyond this headline, highlighting the murky world of Myanmar’s invisible and vulnerable with the help of investigative journalists.
