For the first time in history, Paul Cézanne’s family estate is open to the public. Set in Aix-en-Provence in southern France, the Bastide du Jas Bouffan was far more than a family home for the infamous painter. Within the privacy of these walls, Cézanne carved out a radical new style that moved beyond Impressionism and earned him the formidable title, 'Father of Modernity', from Picasso.
Yet Cézanne spent much of his life as an outsider. Through selected masterpieces, rare photographs and testimony from his great-grandson, this intimate portrait reveals a life of repeated rejection, familial difficulty and even a hidden child.
With access to one of the most important locations in the development of modern painting, this film traces Cézanne’s journey from dismissal and self-doubt to international acclaim. Ultimately, these trials and tribulations would forge a legacy that changed the face of art history forever.
