Glacial Land

1 x 52 HD
Broadcaster:  RUV

The retreat of glaciers is one of the most obvious signs of climate change. Nowhere is this more evident than in Iceland, home to Europe’s largest glacier and some of the most easily accessible and longest researched glaciers in the world.

We follow scientists on an expedition to measure the impact of global climate change by examining Iceland’s ice caps and glacier sands, including Jökulsárlón (The Glacial Lagoon) at the Southern end of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. Having only emerged about 85 years ago, the Glacial Lagoon has grown in size to become the deepest lake in the country. This “new” land gives scientists amazing opportunity to investigate the life emerging in this seemingly harsh environment and predict what might come next in other parts of the world.

From the flourishing of new ecosystems to an entire volcanic system hidden beneath the ice caps, Glacial Land reveals the stunning changes to flora and fauna that climate change will bring if we do not take action now.
