China's Pet Economy

1 x 48
Broadcaster:  CNA

Pet ownership is increasingly popular amongst middle-class Chinese citizens. But there’s a dark side of this pet economy.

A grisly discovery at a delivery depot in Chengdu highlights one part of the problem. Animals bought for as little as US$1.50 and shipped like parcels without food or water for days on end. Most don’t survive the journey. Yet the case is just the tip of the iceberg. Animal rights activists uncover a disturbing community of animal abusers who are filming themselves torturing pets for leisure and some of them are even customising the videos for paying clients!

With the authorities failing to take action, animal rights activists are taking matters into their own hands to hunt down and expose the animal abusers, but the activists find themselves in the crosshairs of the abusers as well.
