Rewilding Sharks

Broadcaster:  CNA

Sharks have inhabited our oceans for over 400 million years, but just 50 years of overfishing has put many species on the verge of extinction. If sharks disappear, scientists warn the entire ocean ecosystem could collapse.

But in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, the world's first-ever shark rewilding project is under way. Locals and international scientists, led by world-leading shark expert Nesha Ichida, are collaborating to reintroduce endangered zebra sharks into their native waters. We follow the extraordinary journey of 'Sharky', who grows from a tiny creature inside an egg in an aquarium into a brave zebra shark who paves the way for his brothers and sisters to return to the wild. But what will it take for the sharks to survive?

We examine the increasing threats sharks face, meeting the inspiring individuals, from conservationsists and local islanders to ex-poachers, hoping to make a case for shark rewilding programmes internationally. Featuring stunning underwater cinematography, and island landscapes, this is wildlife event like no other.
