At 12:50 pm on the 29th of March 2025, a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. The death toll is currently over 3,500, but is expected to rise even further, making this Myanmar’s worst earthquake in a century.

 

The country, already in a protracted state of emergency due to an ongoing civil war, now has to deal with a natural disaster pushing its thinning resources to breaking point. In a rare move, the government has openly requested international humanitarian aid. How will Myanmar, which is still under strict military rule, deal with the disaster?
