Heavyweight: Japan's Female Sumo Wrestlers

1 x 48
Broadcaster:  CNA

For over 1400 years, Sumo has stood as a symbol of masculinity in Japan, with women banned from even touching or entering a professional sumo ring.

Now, a new generation of female sumo wrestlers are challenging tradition. By demanding access to the sport’s top tier, they are shining a light on Japanese patriarchy and the enormous gender gap in one of the world's most developed nations.

With exclusive access, we follow some of the world's top female sumo wrestlers, as they train for the Sumo World Championships. We learn about the history of female sumo wrestling, the extraordinary challenges they face, and the ongoing campaign to remove the ban on women in professional sumo.
