In this landmark special, explorer Levison Wood and historian Alex Bescoby set out on an urgent mission to honour the last surviving veterans of the Burma Campaign – the brutal, often forgotten chapter of the Second World War fought in the jungles of Asia where the British Army repelled the Japanese away from Colonial India.
Their quest leads them to historic battlefields on the India-Myanmar border, where Levison's own grandfather fought. There, they uncover the huge but overlooked contribution of Commonwealth soldiers and, against all odds, attempt to deliver a Burma Star medal and message from King Charles III to a 100-year-old veteran amidst a raging civil war in Myanmar.
80 years on from VJ Day, The Last Burma Star serves as a poignant nod to both one of World War II's lesser well-known stories and the heroic acts of sacrifice which have never been rewarded until now.
