In August 2023, Spanish football player, Jenni Hermoso, had just won the World Cup when she was kissed on the lips by the head of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, as she ascended the podium to collect her medal. This non-consensual act, performed with millions watching, was to ultimately cost Rubiales his prestigious job and to inflame a fierce backlash that engulfed not only Spain, but the whole footballing world.

The controversy overshadowed the Spanish team's victory and only intensified as Rubiales repeatedly refused to admit fault and step down. By the time he was forced to do so, the debate had widened to a reckoning with sexual violence not only in sport, but in society at large as thousands of women came forward to share their own stories.
