God's Business

6 x 24
Broadcaster:  Al Jazeera

A 6-part series in which John McCarthy explores the complex relationship between religion, money and power in a fast-changing world. God’s Business aims to get to the heart of what it means to be religious today, as well as what it takes to function as a large religious organisation in the modern world, full of immediate information and competitive pressure.

John travels to India, Israel, Greece, France and the UK to report on a different religious sect, minority or scandal. In India John encounters a Hindu sect that has grown into an international big business. In Israel he investigates the growing power that the Islamist movement has on the Muslim population within the Jewish state. In Greece John seeks to reveal the secret scandals of the Greek Orthodox Church. In London John discovers how the Anglican Church regarded by many as increasingly unpopular has used modern marketing and commercial techniques to bolster attendance. Lastly, in Paris John investigates the life of Europe’s Muslim population: have we got Euro-Islam with all the tolerance of multi-culturalism or rather has a ghettoised society been created?

This unique film casts light on the most relevant issues facing us today at the same time as exploring some of the most important religious sites and traditions of past centuries.
