How Ships Grow is a dramatic new programme which follows shipbuilders and engineers as they take on the challenge of separating ships in two to make even bigger vessels.
This is meticulous, hard work demanding precision engineering and attention to even the tiniest details: The hull needs to be cut into two parts before a new mid-section can be installed, and thousands of electric cables and pipes need to be severed. All odds are against the engineers!
If the waterproofing of the pipes proves to be insufficient, the ship could sink after being pulled apart. Strong winds could topple both halves of the vessel. Once the bow of the ship is undocked, the mid-section – weighing more than 400 tons – is inserted. And that’s where the real trouble starts...
