Get Real investigates Malaysia's unregulated private religious boarding schools. In September 2017, a fire raged through a private boarding school, and 21 died.
The school was Tahfiz - a Quran learning academy. It shook the nation, but what was more worrying was that this was not a one-off incident among Tahfiz schools in Malaysia. Between 2015 and 2017, there was an average of one fire at a Tahfiz every 5 days.
Tahfiz schools have boomed in the last decade. Unregulated and unsupervised, are these schools a danger to the children? Despite the dangers of mysterious fires and abuse, why are these schools more popular than ever before?
