Sonia Rykiel: Rebel and Visionary

1 x 44
Broadcaster:  NDR

Sonia Rykiel is a timeless fashion icon. At the age of 85, she is still among the most creative and successful designers in the world, and has just released a collection of underwear for international high-street store H&M. Sonia Rykiel: Rebel and Visionary is an intimate documentary portrait of Rykiel, revealing the sensitive woman behind the myth and the unique universe at her headquarters on the eve of the 2010 winter show.

Originally Rykiel wanted to become a housewife and mother, and was well on the way towards fulfilling this modest dream when she got married in 1960 and had two children. Her husband owned a small boutique but she did not like the clothes being sold in the shop, and so she designed her own woolen jumper. Within a very short time this creation was on the cover of the Elle and Rykiel became known as the queen of knits.

After her first big success and the divorce from her husband, she opened her own boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the artist and university quarter in Paris. Influenced by the social revolution around her, she freed the female body from the rigid silhouette of former decades. Like almost no other fashion designer she stands for sensuality, eroticism and feminine self-confidence.
