Claes Oldenburg: Larger than Life

1 x 52 HD
Broadcaster:  ZDF/ARTE

Swedish-American sculptor Claes Oldenburg turned everyday objects into monumental art, revolutionising sculpture and challenging art world elitism. Ahead of retrospectives in Stockholm and Zurich, this film traces his journey through Pop Art, protest and poetry, revealing a body of work as playful as it is provocative.

Emerging in New York in the early 1960s, Oldenburg created fabric sculptures of oversized cakes and hamburgers and opened The Store in Manhattan, blurring the lines between gallery, shop and street. With crucial insights from his family, personal diary and fellow artists and curators, his legacy emerges as deeply rooted in the consumer culture of post-war America.

He is an icon of humour and accessibility, whose work yet asks fundamental questions about art: who does it belong to? Where should it exist? And how can it become part of everyday life?
