Marlon Brando: In Paradise

1 x 52 HD
Broadcaster:  ZDF/ARTE

Launching in time for the centenary of Marlon Brando's birth in April 2024, Marlon Brando: In Paradise reveals - for the first time - an unknown side of the iconic star; as a pioneer of environmentalism and conservation.

The film features the exclusive participation of Brando's daughter, and his former personal assistant speaking on camera about the star for the first time ever. The film offers a fresh retrospective of Brando's career, contrasting his infamous roles such as Stanley Kowalski in Streetcar Named Desire and The Godfather’s fearsome Don Corleone with his deep and personal passion for social justice, indigenous rights, and environmental causes.

Inspired by his encounter with the islands of Tahiti whilst shooting 1962’s Mutiny in the Bounty, Brando determined to make the French Polynesian island of Tetiaroa a home for him and his family, far from the prying eyes of Hollywood. After purchasing the island, he set about creating a facility for scientific observation and environmental protection, and establishing a sustainable resort on the island, all the way back in the 1960s. Marlon Brando: In Paradise takes viewers on a tour of the island which Brando called home, and reveals his unknown and overlooked legacy as an environmentalist.

Today, the atoll faces existential threats from rising sea levels on warming planet. In this conservation endeavour, as in his iconic career, Brando was a visionary.
