Ice Girls

2 x 40 / 1 x 89
Broadcaster:  CBC

Ice Girls follows the trials and tribulations of three élite young figure skaters – Canadian Keyla Ohs and UK skaters Jennifer Holmes and Vikki Hodges – as they pursue their dreams of one day being the girl who picks roses off the ice and ascends the Olympic podium. Shot over three years, Ice Girls paints an intimate portrait of these girls' lives and their dedication to a sport that demands tremendous physical power and psychological strength. In a world where the cost of competing can eat up a family's savings, winning is a matter of national pride, and anything less than perfect performance does not cut the grade. Ice Girls celebrates the dedication and courage of these young women as they pursue their dreams of figure skating stardom.

In Part One we meet their parents, families, coaches and supporters who are all trying to make the dream a reality. Over two years of filming we also learn about the reality behind ‘the most glamorous sport in the world’ – the stresses, the sacrifices, the injuries and leaving home.

In Part Two, the girls each try to win national titles in order to qualify for the World Championships, but the stresses of the sport are taking their toll. The demands of living away from family, missing or quitting school, boyfriends and emotional complications are starting to affect their ability to compete. And in a world where only the winner advances, the coaches and sporting associations are growing impatient. Who has not only the physical ability but also the psychological strength to stay in the sport? Or is winning a gold medal a one in a million chance?
