Broadcaster:  NOVA

This is the uplifting story of the medical breakthrough many scientists thought impossible. Cystic fibrosis used to be a death sentence, usually in childhood. But thanks to parents who’ll stop at nothing to save their children and the researchers who joined them, we’re now witnessing a transformative scientific advance.

In one of modern medicine’s greatest breakthroughs, this compelling documentary chronicles the historic highs and heartbreaking setbacks from the disease’s discovery in the 1930s to today, culminating in the approval in 2019 of the groundbreaking treatment, Trikafta.

Around one thousand children a year are diagnosed with CF in the United States alone. Now, over 90% of people diagnosed with CF in the USA have the opportunity of utterly transformed lives.

But who gets access to this costly miracle? Initially priced around $300,000 per patient annually, Pharmaceuticals company Vertex has faced backlash for making Trikafta out of reach in many countries. In this film, we travel to Egypt, where CF patients' life expectancy is around 8 years, and where Vertex offered the drug for free. We meet Marwan Moheissen, at 25 one of Egypt's oldest CF survivors, make dramatic progress after starting Trikafta.

Personal stories of resilience are interwoven with the scientific achievements that led to this landmark in genetic medicine, where patients can now imagine a future once thought impossible.
